Many books have been banned over the years in the United States. Over the years, people have been so disturbed with certain content that they want to try and ban the book, or information, locally so that no one else can read them. Occasionally, a government will ban a book. However, it is not illegal to read banned books. Banning books just makes it more difficult for people to get the books to read. People try to get books banned because they feel that the information has offended them in some way. Banned books usually include books that have some type of explicit and/or offensive content. A Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Newton Peck is high on the banned book list because of it's description of the brutality of pig-farming life and it is considered too disturbing for the young teens it is written for. In 1989, two California school districts banned Grimm's Fairy Tales because Little Red Riding Hood carries food and wine in her basket to grandmother. The reason the book was banned was concerns about inappropriate use of alcohol. Between 1961 and 1982, The Catcher in the Rye was the most censored book in high schools and libraries in the United States. Since 1990, the American Library Association has maintained a list of books that have been banned or censored in the United States. (AdultLearn)
