Interview with Angela Childers (My Mom)
Me: Why do you think someone tried to ban this book?
Mom: The nature of the story involving kidnapping and sexual abuse in the story.
Me: Do you think that it was right for the book to be banned?
Mom: No, I don't believe that any book should be banned. I think everyone should be able to read what they want, but certain books should have parental permission because they might not agree with everything.
Me: Do you think that if a book is banned in schools, it should also be banned in public libraries?
Mom: No because the public library is much more open to different age ranges. I also don't like the idea of banning books. I believe that it would start a cycle of banning books everywhere and the supply of books would be low.
Me: Do you think there are some good things about banning books, such as this one?
Mom: I really just don't think there is anything good about banning books everywhere. It should be the parent who decides if their child should read that book.
Me: A Stolen Life was first challenged with a parents child who was in the 7th grade, do you think that that age is too young for reading this book?
Mom: I think it's important for a parent to read and check up on the book before the child reads it. In my opinion, I think seventh grade is too young to read the graphic parts in the book, so the parent should do a little research on the book if they're concerned
Me: What age do you think a person/student should read this book?
Mom: I think somewhere around fifteen years old is okay.
Me: What do you think the point is to ban a book in one county, when another student in a different county could pick up the same book to read?
Mom: I don't think it makes any sense to ban a book when another child could do the same thing.
