This book was banned because a parent saw their seventh grade child reading it and saw some vulgar language in it. The parent took it to the superintendent where he officially banned it in their county. The parent of the child thought it was too inappropriate for her child to be reading. The school said they usually have conferences with with students to let them know about the book, if it has something concerning. But the school forgot to have a conference with the child when they checked it out. The book is only banned in Northview Michigan public school system.
In my personal opinion, I don't think the book should have been banned. I understand the parents concern with the content of the book and with how old the child was. If the parent doesn't think that their child is mature enough to read or hear about a subject, then that is the parents own decision to stop their child from reading the content. If a different parent thinks that it's okay for their own child, then that's their own decision. This certain book was very explicit at times, so I don't think my parents would have wanted to me read that in seventh grade either.
On the other hand I feel like it isn't one person's right to decide what people should read across the whole county, or even state. Each parent has a right to decide certain things with their children, and only their children. No one else has the right to choose the fate for someone else's child.
When this parent chose to ban the book, I think that they were basically saying that no minor is mature enough to read this book. And some people aren't mature enough, no matter what their age is, but it was still not this one parents right to ban it for every child in the Michigan school system.
